Château Léoville Poyferré 2020 in magnum is a Saint-Julien with real stature. This is the estate's grand vin, a red Bordeaux from the Médoc, and the 2020 vintage carries added meaning for the château: it marks one hundred years of Cuvelier family ownership. The special bottle with golden details refers to that anniversary and to the estate's vineyard parcels.The blend is led by cabernet sauvignon, with merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot completing the picture. In this vintage, the Merlot from Bolitorte is noted for its ripe, generous character, while the Cabernet Sauvignon from Gaunettes, closer to the Gironde estuary, brings finesse and elegance. Ageing took place for 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques, a high proportion of them new. The tasting notes point to a powerful, concentrated wine with ripe dark fruit, firm mature tannins, freshness and a long, spicy to mineral-toned finish.
