Product info about Ekam Essencia Blanc 2019
Ekam Essencia Blanc 2019 is a Spanish white wine with a very particular point of view. Made entirely from riesling, it comes from Catalonia's D.O. Costers del Segre, in the Pyrenean area of Pallars Jussà around Talarn in Lleida. The vineyards sit high, between roughly 800 and 1,230 metres, and that altitude matters: the wine depends on natural acidity to carry its gentle sweetness.Castell d'Encús shapes Ekam Essencia in a lightly sweet to medium-sweet style, described by the producer as reminiscent of kabinett or spätlese. The grapes come from the estate's own vineyards and are hand-harvested in small 10 kg crates. Selected parcels combine high natural acidity with high sugar levels, while only limited botrytis is used so that the clarity of riesling remains central.
For the 2019 vintage, the wine spent 10 months on its lees in tank before bottling. Production was limited to 1,500 bottles. At 10.5% alcohol, with around 30 g/l residual sugar and marked acidity, it is less about simple sweetness than about tension and finesse. Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate awarded the 2019 vintage 93+ points, placing it in the direction of a delicate medium-sweet riesling. It also has a clear gastronomic side: spicy dishes, risotto, fruit desserts, blue cheeses, shellfish such as lobster and scallops, smoked meat, and savoury or salty preparations all make sense with its balance of sweetness and acidity.
