Byrrh Grand Quinquina is a French red quinquina, an aromatised wine aperitif rather than a vintage wine. Its character is built around Roussillon wines, mistelle, quinquina bark, botanicals and spices, with muscat mistelle adding a fruitier, sweeter element to balance the dry bitterness of quinine.The drink is closely tied to Thuir in French Catalonia, in the Roussillon near the Spanish border. Byrrh dates back to the 19th century, when the brothers Simon and Pallade Violet created a wine aperitif based on quinquina. Grand Quinquina is positioned as a recipe that looks back to the original late-19th-century style of Byrrh: wine-led, bittersweet and aromatic.

About BYRRH
Byrrh is a traditional French brand best known for its aromatic, fortified wine aperitif. The brand was founded in 1866 by brothers Pallade and Simon Violet in the southern French town of Thuir, located in the Occitanie region near the Spanish border. Byrrh was originally conceived as a health drink based on red wine, to which cinchona bark and various herbs were added. Due to the use of cinchona bark, Byrrh acquired a mild bitterness, which distinguished it from other French aperitifs such as vermouth and Dubonnet. Throughout the 20th century, Byrrh grew to become a beloved aperitif wine in France and beyond, thanks in part to its distinctive, lightly sweet and spicy taste. In the 1960s, the well-known beverage group Pernod Ricard took over the brand, which led to expanded production and distribution. Traditional Byrrh is still produced in the historic cellars of Thuir, where one of the largest oak barrels in the world can be found. Byrrh is often served neat, with a slice of orange or as a base for cocktails, and in recent years has experienced a revival among classic aperitif enthusiasts.
