Klein Constantia 2019 Magnum is a naturally sweet white wine from Constantia in South Africa, presented in a 1.5 litre magnum bottle. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of wine we like to introduce slowly: not just as a sweet wine, but as a carefully built expression of Muscat, vintage conditions and patient maturation.The wine is made from Muscat de Frontignan. In 2019, Constantia had a cool, wet and windy spring, affecting flowering and giving smaller berries with lower yields. Harvest was spread over 26 separate pickings from late February to late March, ranging from fruit with high acidity to very ripe, partly dried grapes. That range of material is central to the wine's style: concentrated and sweet, yet held together by freshness.
Each picking was initially vinified separately before the components were brought together later in fermentation to balance sugar, alcohol and acidity. Fermentation stopped naturally. The wine then matured for 18 months in 500-litre oak barrels, half of them new, followed by a further 18 months in large wooden foudres before blending and bottling.
The magnum format gives this release extra presence, particularly for a wine noted for its ageing potential. Klein Constantia is a historic South African wine producer that traces its origins to the late 17th century at the foot of the Constantia Mountains, just south of Cape Town. The estate is especially known for its location on the old Constantia estates, where in the 18th and 19th centuries the renowned Constantia wines were produced and acclaimed worldwide. After several changes of ownership and a period of decline, Klein Constantia was rebuilt in the 20th century and repositioned as a leading wine estate in the region. The vineyards benefit from a moderate climate, a mix of granite-rich soils and the cooling influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean, resulting in elegant wines with plenty of freshness. The assortment ranges from crisp Sauvignon Blancs and full-bodied Chardonnay to classic Bordeaux blends and sweet dessert wines, including the legendary Vin de Constance.
