Flavour notes

The 2016 Riserva shows the deeper side of Sangiovese, with cherry, dark fruit and at times a kirsch-like note. Around that core come violet, orange peel and sandalwood, followed by leather, tobacco, spice, ash, tar and mineral accents.

On the palate it is described as dry, firm and structured, yet with tannins that remain refined rather than harsh. Freshness gives the wine lift, while fruit and mineral notes return through the long finish. Some notes also mention more evolved tones such as stewed plum, tobacco and espresso.

Product info about Poggio Antico Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva 2016 Dubbele Magnum (3l)

Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2016 is a wine where the vintage forms an important part of the story. Poggio Antico only produces this Riserva in selected years, choosing parcels that show greater concentration, firm acidity and structured tannins. In 2016, those qualities came together in what the producer describes as a classic Mediterranean growing season, with summer warmth and clear day-night temperature differences.

The estate lies south of the village of Montalcino, on some of the higher vineyard hills of the appellation, and is fully organically certified. For this Riserva, the Sangiovese comes from vineyards at around 500 metres altitude, with southern exposure and stony, gravel-rich soils. After cold maceration and fermentation in conical stainless-steel tanks, the wine spent 30 months in large traditional Slavonian and French oak casks, followed by another 30 months in bottle.

Presented here in a 3-litre double magnum, it has a presence that goes beyond the usual bottle. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of format we like to place in front of customers who are looking for a serious Tuscan wine with depth, structure and a clear sense of occasion. The reported production of 6,000 bottles and the strong critical recognition from names such as Wine Spectator, Jane Anson, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and James Suckling add further context to the stature of this release.

The producer suggests pairing Poggio Antico Brunello wines with barbecue dishes such as ribs, steak and grilled vegetables, served at around 18 °C. With 15% alcohol and a firmly built Riserva style, this is a wine to give time in the glass and space at the table.

About POGGIO ANTICO

Poggio Antico is a wine estate located in the heart of Tuscany, near the town of Montalcino. The estate focuses on the production of mainly Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino, two renowned Italian red wines made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. Poggio Antico has vineyards situated at about 450 meters above sea level, which contributes to a favorable microclimate and a slow, balanced ripening of the grapes. Since its founding in the 1970s, the winery has developed into an established name within the region, especially because of the careful selection of grapes and the preservation of traditional production methods. The wines of Poggio Antico are known for their refined character, freshness, and structure, qualities that arise through a careful approach both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The range includes different expressions of Brunello, including riserva wines that have undergone longer aging. Thanks to its location and craftsmanship, the estate manages to express the typical power and elegance of Montalcino wines, making Poggio Antico an interesting choice for lovers of Italian red wine.
