Marques De Vargas Seleccion Privada 2016 is a red Rioja from Rioja Alta, made from estate vineyards at Hacienda Pradolagar in Logroño. The fruit for this wine comes from three named plots: La Victoria, Manolo and La Garnacha. Together they cover 11 hectares, with vines averaging 40 years of age for this vintage.Selection is at the heart of this release. The grapes were hand-harvested in small 12 kg crates, cooled overnight after picking and then sorted by hand. Tempranillo makes up 77% of the blend, supported by Garnacha and Mazuelo. Vinification was adapted to each plot and soil type, using native yeasts from the individual vineyard parcels.
The wine matured for 25 months in new French oak before being bottled in May 2019. Marques De Vargas only makes Seleccion Privada in good vintages and in limited quantities; the 2016 release counted 13,381 bottles of 75 cl. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we value this bottle as a Rioja with a clear sense of origin: old vines, parcel selection and patient ageing, all aimed at preserving fruit and soft tannins.
The 2016 vintage also received strong recognition, including high scores from Tim Atkin, Decanter, Guía Peñín and James Suckling. More importantly, it presents the kind of carefully composed Rioja where structure, depth and vineyard identity are allowed to speak without losing elegance.
