Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio 2010 is a dry red Barolo DOCG from Piedmont, made entirely from Nebbiolo grown in the Cerequio cru. The vineyard sits between La Morra and Barolo, with south to south-west facing plots at around 320 metres altitude, calcareous marl soils and vines planted, among others, in 1972 and 1990.The 2010 vintage gives this wine a particularly compelling shape. A cooler growing cycle helped produce Barolo with greater elegance and higher acidity, while the wine still carries the firm structure expected from this site and grape. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see it as a Cerequio where concentration is matched by freshness, and where the tannins form part of the architecture rather than standing apart from it.
Vinification takes place in oak vats, with roughly twenty days of fermentation and skin contact, followed by a minimum of three years of maturation. About two of those years are spent in medium-sized oak casks before further bottle ageing. With only the last bottles remaining, this is no longer the kind of Barolo one can simply replace at will.
Its standing is reflected in strong critical recognition, including 95 points from James Suckling and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, as well as Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso. At the table, it belongs with dishes of real depth: beef, wild boar, venison, lamb, veal braised in Barolo, aged Parmesan or dishes with Alba white truffle. Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte.
