Michele Chiarlo Montald Albarossa 2018 is a red wine from Piedmont, released under the Piemonte Albarossa DOC designation. It is made entirely from Albarossa and comes from the Montald vineyard in Montaldo Scarampi, in the province of Asti, giving the wine a clearly defined origin rather than a broad regional identity.The Montald plot covers 3 hectares, planted in 2003 at around 250 metres above sea level, with a south to south-west exposure. Its soil is of marine sedimentary origin, with a notable presence of Asti sands and micro-elements such as magnesium, potassium and manganese. The grapes are harvested by hand, following green harvesting at the end of summer.
In the cellar, the wine is handled in a way that keeps the emphasis on fruit, structure and gradual development. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by 12 months in large oak casks and further ageing in bottle. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this Montald as a Piedmont red for those moments when you want something with depth and regional character, yet not a wine driven by pronounced new oak. These are also the last bottles of this 2018 vintage.
It is well suited to grilled meat, fettuccine with wild boar sauce, pork ribs, stews, spiced meat dishes, cheeses and robust vegetable dishes. Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte.
