Michele Chiarlo Barolo Tortoniano 2018 is a Piedmontese Barolo whose name points straight to its origin: Tortonian soils of ancient calcareous clay marl, with a marine sedimentary background and active limestone. For this wine, that soil reference is part of the character rather than a decorative detail. The wine is made from nebbiolo grown in selected vineyards long associated with the Chiarlo family.The 2018 growing season brought renewed water reserves after the dry 2017 vintage, thanks to snow and rain in winter and spring. A warm, dry summer followed, while the final weeks before harvest were marked by mild days and cool nights. The grapes were harvested by hand between 6 and 10 October, after careful crop thinning in the vineyard.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by maturation in medium-sized oak casks and further bottle ageing before release. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Barolo for drinkers who appreciate the more classical side of nebbiolo: garnet colour, red fruit, rose, herbal and spicy detail, firm but fine tannins and the kind of structure that benefits from time in the bottle. Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte. The wines of the house are known for their balance and accessibility, and are appreciated worldwide.
