Vandeurzen Albariño 2020 is a fine example of how Belgian white wine can take an unexpected direction when a producer chooses a grape variety that is still less common in Belgium. It comes from Wijnkasteel Vandeurzen in Linden, part of Lubbeek near Leuven in Flemish Brabant.The wine is grown in the estate's vineyards on the southern slope of Linden. Vandeurzen points to sandy loam soils with an iron-rich subsoil and a local microclimate as important elements of its viticulture. The Vandeurzen family acquired the historic castle estate in 2013, restored it over several years and planted more than 33,000 vines.
For this Albariño, vinification and maturation take place in stainless steel, with no oak ageing mentioned. That keeps the focus on fruit, freshness and the direct expression of the grape.
