La Chapelle de Haut Bages Liberal 2018 is the second wine of Château Haut-Bages Liberal in Pauillac, Bordeaux. It has its own role within the estate: created in 1988, La Chapelle was intended to show another expression of the Haut-Bages Liberal terroir, often drawing on younger vines than the grand vin.The 2018 vintage is particularly interesting because the blend is led by Merlot: 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. In Pauillac, where Cabernet Sauvignon often sets the tone, that gives this wine a distinctive balance of structure and approachability. The grapes come from the château's vineyards, with clay-limestone gravel around the estate and deep gravel on the Bages plateau.
Each parcel was vinified separately, with a 24-day maceration and careful pressing. Ageing lasted 12 months, using a mix of oak barrels and ovoid tanks. That choice supports the wine's fruit concentration and definition while keeping its sense of freshness and mineral tension.
