Château Haut-Bages Libéral 2022 is a red Pauillac from the Médoc and the grand vin of a 5th Grand Cru Classé estate from the 1855 classification. The wine comes from around 30 hectares of vineyards, with plots near the château on clay-limestone soils and others on deep gravel around the Bages plateau. That origin gives this vintage a clearly Pauillac identity: structured, cabernet-led and shaped by freshness and mineral tension.
The blend is 87% cabernet sauvignon and 13% merlot. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with Demeter mentioned for this vintage. In the cellar, vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, followed by 16 months of ageing in a mix of new oak, one-wine barrels, ovoid concrete vats and amphorae. La Chapelle de Haut Bages Liberal 2018 is the second wine of Château Haut-Bages Liberal in Pauillac, Bordeaux. It has its own role within the estate: created in 1988, La Chapelle was intended to show another expression of the Haut-Bages Liberal terroir, often drawing on younger vines than the grand vin.
The 2018 vintage is particularly interesting because the blend is led by Merlot: 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. In Pauillac, where Cabernet Sauvignon often sets the tone, that gives this wine a distinctive balance of structure and approachability. La Chapelle de Haut-Bages Libéral 2019 shows the more approachable side of Château Haut-Bages Libéral while staying firmly rooted in Pauillac. It is the château's second wine, made from younger vines, with the 2019 blend built around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.
Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine its shape and structure, while Merlot brings fruit and a softer drinking feel. The estate was certified organic in 2019 and was moving towards biodynamic certification at the time, adding an extra layer of context to a wine that remains very much about clarity, fruit and place.
