Flavour notes
The colour is a lively cherry red. Aromatically, Baslan brings raspberry and cherry together with herbs, fresh hay and a delicate note of almond blossom. After some time in the glass, sour cherry becomes more pronounced, joined by a touch of bitter almond and lightly ethereal herbal tones. On the palate it is dry and slender, yet it has more grip than a purely easy-going Vernatsch. Red fruit, roasted almond and savoury spice are carried by fine, velvety tannins that feel quite present for the variety. The finish is long, keeping fruit, almond and herbal tension neatly in line.

Product info about Kranzelhof Baslan 2019
Kranzelhof Baslan 2019 is a red wine from South Tyrol, from the area around Cermes and Merano. It is made from Vernatsch, known in Italian as Schiava, a traditional local grape variety that naturally points towards red fruit, freshness and a slimmer build rather than heavy concentration. What gives this Baslan its extra dimension is the way Kranzelhof handles that lighter style. The grapes come from south-facing slopes in the Merano basin, from vineyards at altitude on soils with moraine deposits and granite. Reduced yields, several manual harvest passes and a fermentation that includes part of the stems all add more grip and detail. Around seven months on the fine lees in used wood supports texture and length rather than obvious oak flavour.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as the kind of South Tyrolean red that rewards a little attention in the glass. The 2019 is dry, red-fruited and gently savoury, with fine tannins and enough structure to go beyond the idea of Vernatsch as simply a light, early-drinking wine. Served slightly chilled, it pairs naturally with vitello tonnato, pasta, poultry, South Tyrolean speck, tuna or lighter game and ragout dishes.
As these are the last bottles, this vintage is a fine opportunity to taste Baslan with a few years of bottle age already behind it.
