Flavour notes

The colour is deep crimson with a dark core. Aromatically, it brings together red and black cherries, dried mint and fresh violets, with further notes of cassis, plum, blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar, tobacco, graphite, chocolate, mocha, eucalyptus and a touch of vanilla.

On the palate, ripe dark fruit is carried by lively acidity and a fine, sometimes chalky tannin frame. The body sits between medium and full, with power and freshness rather than heavy charred flavours. The finish develops slowly, carrying cassis, minty spice and cedar-toned detail.

Product info about Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is the flagship wine of Wynns Coonawarra Estate and part of the estate's Icon Range. First produced in 1982, it is made only in small quantities from selected Cabernet Sauvignon parcels in the heart of Coonawarra's terra rossa soils.

The 2018 release draws on fruit from three chosen Wynns vineyards, with vines averaging 29 years of age. The season brought a warm summer, followed by cooler autumn conditions that extended ripening. That background helps explain the wine's repeated themes of depth, freshness and finely shaped structure.

Maturation took place over 15 months in French barriques and hogsheads, 35% of them new. The oak influence is described more in terms of cedar, mocha and chocolate nuances than heavy toast, leaving room for the Cabernet fruit to remain clear. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Australian Cabernet we like to present when someone is looking for a serious Coonawarra wine with ageing potential. Only the last bottles of this vintage remain.

The 2018 John Riddoch received high scores from several respected wine commentators and is repeatedly described as a wine for further cellaring. Wynns itself notes that, under good cellar conditions, this vintage can continue to develop, with evolution mentioned to 2050 and beyond.

About WYNNS

Wynns is a well-known Australian winery from the Coonawarra region, an area that is recognized worldwide for its characteristic terra rossa soil, particularly suitable for growing quality grapes. The winery was taken over in 1951 by David Wynn, who has since linked his name to the brand. Wynns is especially loved for its red wines, with its flagship being the Cabernet Sauvignon, which, thanks to the limestone-rich soil and cool climate, gains a distinctive style: generally elegant, with plenty of fruit and a subtle balance of acidity and tannins. The range consists of various premium wines made from grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chardonnay, and includes both approachable and more collectible bottles. The Wynns Coonawarra Estate Winery is located in the heart of Coonawarra and owns some of the oldest vineyards in the region, which is reflected in the depth and structure of their wines. With its consistent quality over the years, Wynns has established a permanent place in the Australian wine world and is also appreciated internationally.
