Sena 2019 in double magnum is not a separate cuvée, but the same Chilean red wine presented in a striking 3-litre format. That size suits the wine's sense of occasion: 2019 is the 25th vintage of Sena, grown in Ocoa in the Aconcagua Valley, on well-draining stony and gravelly soils of volcanic and colluvial origin, around 40 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean.

The wine takes its inspiration from Bordeaux, yet the identity remains clearly Chilean. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend at 60%, supported by Malbec, Carmenere and Petit Verdot. Carmenere is an important part of the Chilean signature here. The vineyard is farmed according to biodynamic principles, and in 2019 the coastal influence was especially important: although Chile experienced a warm year overall, the Sena vineyard saw a cooler-than-average summer, allowing slower ripening while retaining freshness.

Maturation lasted 22 months, mainly in French oak barrels with a smaller proportion in foudres. The oak is part of the wine's structure, but the tasting notes consistently point towards freshness, depth, polished tannins and precise fruit rather than heaviness. Sena 2019 shows a deep, bright ruby colour with purple reflections. The aroma brings together red and black fruit, cassis, crushed berries, blackberry, plum and cherry. Around that fruit are fresher aromatic details, including floral notes, orange peel, mint, dill and rosemary, followed by pepper, cedar, walnut, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, coffee bean and a pastry-like touch.

On the palate, the fruit becomes more layered, with notes of blueberry pie, cassis cream and fresh red and black fruit. The wine moves from medium-bodied elegance towards a fuller structure, carried by fresh acidity and very fine, polished tannins. The finish is clean and long, with hints of lightly dried cherry, wet earth, slate and stony tones.
