Joseph Phelps Insignia 2018 is a Napa Valley red with a clear sense of purpose. Insignia is the flagship cuvée of Joseph Phelps Vineyards, first introduced in 1974 as an estate-grown Bordeaux-style blend built around the best lots of the vintage from the estate's own vineyards.The 2018 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Its fruit comes from six Joseph Phelps estate vineyards across Napa Valley, including sites in Stags Leap District, South Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District, St. Helena and Rutherford. Rather than expressing one single vineyard, it brings together several Napa Valley voices in one carefully composed wine.
According to the producer, the 2018 growing season was cooler and mild, with a slower start in spring and gradual ripening through August and September. That steady development is an important part of the wine's dark-fruited depth and colour. Maturation for 24 months in new French oak adds the cedar, cocoa, tobacco and spice notes that appear throughout the tasting descriptions.
