Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a Napa Valley red that shows why this St. Helena producer is so closely associated with Californian Cabernet. Despite the varietal name, the wine is built as a Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux blend: 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small additions of Cabernet Franc and Malbec.
The fruit comes from estate and grower vineyards across Napa Valley, including St. Helena, southern Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District and Stags Leap District. Joseph Phelps described 2018 as a cool, mild vintage, with a slower growing season and longer hang time. That extra time on the vine helped build flavour development and fruit quality while keeping the wine focused.

Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a Napa Valley Cabernet with a clear sense of place and purpose. This is the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Joseph Phelps, not Insignia and not a single-vineyard bottling. The fruit comes from several Napa Valley areas, including St. Helena, South Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District, Stags Leap District and Rutherford, giving the wine a broader expression of the valley rather than the voice of one site alone.
The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. Eighteen months in French and American oak add structure and depth, while the available tasting notes do not present the oak as overpowering. Joseph Phelps Insignia 2018 is a Napa Valley red with a clear sense of purpose. Insignia is the flagship cuvée of Joseph Phelps Vineyards, first introduced in 1974 as an estate-grown Bordeaux-style blend built around the best lots of the vintage from the estate's own vineyards.
The 2018 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Its fruit comes from six Joseph Phelps estate vineyards across Napa Valley, including sites in Stags Leap District, South Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District, St. Helena and Rutherford. Rather than expressing one single vineyard, it brings together several Napa Valley voices in one carefully composed wine.

The 2019 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Petit Verdot and Malbec playing supporting roles. What makes Insignia distinctive is that the composition is not treated as a fixed recipe. Each year, Joseph Phelps builds the wine from the most compelling estate lots available.
