Flavour notes

The wine shows an intense, bright ruby colour. Aromatically, it brings together fresh red and black fruit, with cherry, plum, cassis, black cherry, black raspberry and blueberry. Floral notes of violet and lavender sit alongside rosemary, pepper, liquorice, tobacco, cedar, chocolate and a subtle touch of vanilla and toasted wood.

On the palate, the opening is soft and supple, then the wine broadens into a structured, medium-to-full-bodied style. The tannins are described as fine, ripe and silky, supported by freshness and well-kept acidity. The finish is long, carrying dark fruit, spice, earthy nuances and a graphite-like note.

Product info about Cheval Des Andes 2018

Cheval des Andes 2018 is a dry red wine from Mendoza, Argentina, shaped by the meeting of Argentine Malbec and Bordeaux-inspired blending. The 2018 vintage is composed of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, with fruit from Las Compuertas in Lujan de Cuyo and Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley.

The project brings together Château Cheval Blanc from Saint-Émilion and Terrazas de los Andes in Mendoza. Established in 1999, Cheval des Andes focuses on combining high-altitude Mendoza vineyards with Bordeaux know-how in selection, vinification and blending. Las Compuertas contributes old ungrafted Malbec vines planted in 1929 at around 1,070 metres, while Paraje Altamira, at about 1,150 metres, adds a cooler origin within the blend.

For the producer, 2018 was a classic Mendoza vintage, marked by warm sunny days, low humidity and strong day-night temperature differences during ripening. In the cellar, the wine was made parcel by parcel in small batches. Maturation lasted around 13 months in different oak formats, including barriques, larger barrels and foudres, with 50% new oak.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, Cheval des Andes 2018 stands out as a Mendoza red with pedigree, structure and a clear sense of place. The vintage has received particularly strong critical recognition, including 98 points from James Suckling and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. With only the last bottles remaining, its availability is becoming increasingly limited.

About CHEVAL DES ANDES

Cheval Des Andes is an Argentine wine brand that originated from a collaboration between the renowned French winemaker Chateau Cheval Blanc from Saint-Émilion and the Argentine wine producer Terrazas de los Andes, part of Moët Hennessy. The initiative began at the end of the 1990s with the aim of combining French winemaking traditions with the unique terroir of Mendoza, at the foot of the Andes. The vineyards are situated at a relatively high altitude, allowing the grapes to benefit from cooler nights, optimal sunlight, and clean mountain air. This often results in wines with deep concentration and a balanced freshness. Cheval Des Andes primarily focuses on complex red wines, for which mainly Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are used, varietals that are known for their robust, aromatic character in this region. The philosophy behind the brand revolves around crafting elegant blends that offer both power and finesse, highlighting the best of both Argentine and French winemaking expertise. Due to its limited production and close collaboration with French oenologists, Cheval Des Andes is considered one of the most striking examples of international wine projects in South America.
