Product info about Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay

Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay immediately sets a clear expectation: this is a Scottish blended malt built around spice, with a clearly present fruity side. The Highland and Islay reference gives it a more distinctive identity than a whisky that simply aims for softness.

At 12 years old and bottled at 52%, it has real presence. The available flavour profile points to spice and fruit as the main pillars, while wood, salinity and peat sit in a lighter supporting role rather than dominating the whisky.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we would place this bottle with customers looking for a blended malt with a defined flavour direction and a bit more energy in the glass. As these are the last bottles, it is also not a whisky that will remain in our selection indefinitely.

About WEMYSS

In 2005, Wemyss decided to establish the family business ÉAÎWemyss MaltsÉAú and to bring independent bottlings to the market. Wemyss Malts works both with single casks (the color of the label already shows in which region the distillery is located, the selection and a few poétic keywords give an idea of the organoleptic properties of the whisky, all of this was designed by their advisor and friend Charles MacLean) as well as with limited or permanently available blended malts. On November 30, 2014, Wemyss marked a milestone by establishing the new distillery ÉAÎKingsbarnsÉAú in Fife, not far from St Andrews. Production began in February 2015 and is around 140,000 liters per yearÉAì and can increase to a maximum capacity of 600,000 liters per year. The Kingsbarns team, led by Peter Holroyd, uses locally grown barley and produces a rather fruity Lowland style malt. The maturation of the new make spirit mainly takes place in first fill bourbon barrels and sherry casks.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay?

Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is a blended malt whisky .

Blended malt whisky is a blend of exclusively malt whiskies sourced from different distilleries. The major difference from "regular" blended whisky is that blended malts do not use grain whisky.

Although not common, Compass Box's trendy Blended Malt Whiskies might ring a bell. They do not call themselves "blenders", but "whiskymakers" and they select the best whiskies from the best distilleries for their unique blends.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay a single cask whisky?

No, Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is not a single cask whisky.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay a whisky at cask strength?

No, Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay een goede keuze voor mij?

This Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay a spicy whisky?

Yes, Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay a fruity whisky?

Yes, Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay have a high alcohol content?

Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay an independent bottling?

Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is a whisky of the Wemyss brand bottled by the independent bottler Wemyss. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Wemyss Spice King 12y Highland & Islay a biological whisky?

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
