Flavour notes

The aroma is rich and fruit-driven, opening with ripe plums and juicy cherries, followed by hints of barley and lightly toasted oak. The Ruby Port cask adds a darker, riper fruit tone while leaving the malt character clearly present.

On the palate it feels silky and full, with layers of raspberry jam, warm spices and honeyed malt. The finish is long, carrying subtle floral notes, rich cacao and stewed strawberries.

Product info about Jura 2011 13y Red Wine

Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is a Scottish single malt with a very specific identity: island whisky from Jura, bottled by Douglas Laing in the Old Particular range, matured for 13 years and finished in a Ruby Port cask. The result is a whisky shaped by the meeting of the maritime strength mentioned in the product information and the generous fruitiness of fortified wine.

For Drankenshop Broekmans, the appeal lies in its small-scale nature as much as in its flavour direction. This is a single cask release of just 264 bottles, bottled at 48.4% without colouring and without chill filtration. That gives the whisky a close connection to the individual cask, with the port finish forming an essential part of this particular release rather than a simple finishing touch.

Its character leans towards ripe fruit, warm spice and gentle oak, with malt sweetness supporting the richer wine-cask notes. Peat is not the focus here; the interest is in the depth of red fruit, the spiced warmth and the rounded texture. As these are the last bottles, this Jura offers a limited opportunity to explore a precise 2011 cask selection.

About JURA

The Jura distillery was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbel. However, it was neglected for a long time until it became a complete ru´ne. It was only in the early 1960s that a new chapter in the history of the distillery began: Tony Riley-Smith and Robin Fletcher, landowners on Jura, gave architect William DelmÚ-Evans the mission to build a new and rather unconventional distillery. With the revival of this legendary malt, they allowed the small community on Jura to start a new touristic and economic activity worthy of the name. Since reopening in 1963, the stills on Jura have never stopped running. With a production volume that continues to rise, Jura offers a wide range of whisky. Starting with soft, sweet versions, to robust and even very peated expressions.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine?

Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine a single cask whisky?

Yes, Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine a whisky at cask strength?

No, Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Jura 2011 13y Red Wine might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine een goede keuze voor mij?

This Jura 2011 13y Red Wine can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Jura 2011 13y Red Wine whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine a spicy whisky?

Yes, Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Jura 2011 13y Red Wine pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Jura 2011 13y Red Wine whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Jura 2011 13y Red Wine have a high alcohol content?

Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine an independent bottling?

Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is a whisky of the Jura brand bottled by the independent bottler Douglas Laing. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Jura 2011 13y Red Wine is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Jura 2011 13y Red Wine a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Jura 2011 13y Red Wine whisky from Jura is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
