Our buying advice for Ledaig 2010 14y

The Ledaig 2010 14y is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who love the finer single malt whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Mull and was bottled at 46%. This powerful and intensely smoky whisky requires a developed palate. We advise beginners not to start with this type of whisky because the profile can be too overwhelming. The price of this single malt whisky is a bit higher, but the taste and quality make it more than worth it.

Flavour notes

The aroma starts with soft peat, salt and a mineral edge, followed by an unusual note of smoked cheese. It immediately feels coastal, smoky and slightly rugged.

On the palate there is more sweetness and texture, with custard biscuits and ripe banana set against rock salt. The finish moves back towards the shoreline, bringing lobster, seaweed, clove and a clean sea breeze.

Product info about Ledaig 2010 14y

Ledaig 2010 14 year old is a Scottish single malt from the Isle of Mull, bottled by Cadenhead as part of the Original Collection. It shows the peated side of Tobermory Distillery, a style appreciated for its smoky, coastal and mineral personality.

Tobermory produces two distinct types of single malt: the unpeated whisky under the Tobermory name and the peated version as Ledaig. This 14 year old release matured fully in ex-bourbon casks, giving the distillery's smoky and salty character plenty of room to speak clearly.

Cadenhead's Original Collection is built around selected casks that are brought together and allowed to rest before bottling at 46%, a strength chosen for drinkability. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we like to introduce to customers who enjoy whisky with a firm sense of place: peat, sea air and mineral notes up front, with fruit and spice playing a supporting role.

With the last bottles now available, this Ledaig offers a final opportunity to explore this specific 2010 vintage and 14 year old expression.

About LEDAIG

Ledaig is a Scottish single malt whisky that originates from the Isle of Mull, off the west coast of Scotland. This whisky is produced by the Tobermory Distillery, which has been located on the edge of the eponymous harbor town of Tobermory since 1798. Within the distillery's range, Ledaig specifically stands for the peated, smoky style whisky, in contrast to the much softer Tobermory bottlings. The name Ledaig, pronounced led-chig, means safe harbor in Gaelic and refers to Mull's historical past as an important maritime trading place. The production of Ledaig has a turbulent history: the distillery has been closed and reopened several times, which is typical for many Scottish distilleries with a long tradition. Nowadays, Ledaig impresses with a distinctive, smoky and maritime character, which is loved by fans of robust island malts. The range includes various ages, often matured in ex-bourbon casks, where the spicy peat smoke is beautifully interwoven with salty and slightly fruity notes. Ledaig is recognized worldwide as an authentic example of a peated island whisky with a unique personality, without any pretensions.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Ledaig 2010 14y?

Ledaig 2010 14y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ledaig 2010 14y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ledaig 2010 14y a single cask whisky?

No, Ledaig 2010 14y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Ledaig 2010 14y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ledaig 2010 14y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ledaig 2010 14y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ledaig 2010 14y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a briny character. Indeed, this saltiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this saltiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y a tarred whisky?

Yes, Ledaig 2010 14y is a whisky with an intensely textured flavour profile: you will be able to detect the smokiness of this whisky right from the first sip from your glass. It is a typical characteristic flavour in a particular type whisky that you have to (learn to) love.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Ledaig 2010 14y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ledaig 2010 14y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Ledaig 2010 14y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Ledaig 2010 14y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ledaig 2010 14y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ledaig 2010 14y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Ledaig 2010 14y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y an independent bottling?

Ledaig 2010 14y is a whisky of the Ledaig brand bottled by the independent bottler Cadenhead. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ledaig 2010 14y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ledaig 2010 14y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ledaig 2010 14y whisky from Ledaig is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
