Flavour notes

The aroma opens with bright fruit: fresh pineapple and apricot, joined by hay and a gentle touch of vanilla. It stays clean and fruit-led, with the cask strength giving presence without making the whisky feel closed.

On the palate, tonka bean and black pepper bring a spiced edge, with notes reminiscent of vanilla, almond, cinnamon and clove. The finish is long and fairly direct, leaving menthol freshness, malt and creamy butter biscuits behind.

Product info about Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec

Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is all about the individuality of one cask. This Highland single malt was selected by Belgian importer The Nectar and matured for six years in an ex-bourbon barrel, cask 2017#263. It was bottled at natural cask strength, 59.2%, with only 252 bottles drawn from the cask.

The bourbon barrel has clearly played its part, but it has not taken over the whisky. That is what makes this release so engaging: the fruit remains vivid, with fresh pineapple and apricot at the front, while vanilla, black pepper and tonka bean add a spiced layer underneath. It feels like a whisky that gives space to the spirit rather than hiding it behind heavy wood.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a bottle for drinkers who enjoy the detail of a single cask selection. With its limited outturn and the last bottles now in sight, it captures one specific side of Wolfburn: young, lively, fruity and strengthened by a well-judged bourbon barrel.

About WOLFBURN

Way up in the far north of the Scottish mainland, on the shores overlooking the Orkney Islands, you will find Wolfburn Distillery. It has only been there since 2013, but in the meantime it has already stolen the hearts of many a whisky lover. They do this through an uncomplicated approach and a focus on quality spirit aged in good casks. It is a fairly small distillery, with an annual capacity of just 135,000 litres. When it was founded, it was the most northerly distillery on the mainland, but in the meantime there are two more (smaller) distilleries just a little further north, with 8 Doors and North Point). Wolfburn doesn't really need that title though, the whisky speaks for itself.

At Wolfburn, they work with a small mashtun (1.1 tonnes) and four washbacks, in which fermentation takes between 70-92 hours. The copper stills have a capacity of 5,500 litres (wash still) and 3,600 litres (spirit still) respectively. Untasted whisky is mainly made at Wolfburn, although small amounts of tarted malt are also experimented with. A major milestone for the distillery was the launch of their very first whisky with an age statement for the standard range: the 10yo, launched in 2023, was met with good response from tasters around the world.

In addition to the 10yo, Wolfburn's base range includes a diverse range of flavour profiles, including the Northland (American oak, quarter casks), Aurora (bourbon and sherry casks) and the Morven (with a slight hint of peat). The consistently high quality of this base range is striking, and there are also a number of limited bottlings every year, which are also always worth discovering.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec?

Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec a single cask whisky?

Yes, Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec een goede keuze voor mij?

This Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec a spicy whisky?

Yes, Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec a fruity whisky?

Yes, Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec an independent bottling?

No, Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is an official bottling of Wolfburn.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Wolfburn 2017 6y Single Cask Nec a biological whisky?

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
