Product info about Kilchoman 16y

Kilchoman 16y is a significant release in the Kilchoman story. According to the supplied product information, it was the distillery's oldest bottling to date in 2023, giving this Islay single malt a clear sense of occasion. It is a whisky shaped by peat, time and cask influence, with maturity playing a central role.

The whisky was created from a vatting of 21 ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 50% ABV. That cask combination supports the style described in the tasting notes: vanilla and fruit from one side, richer spice and dried-fruit impressions from the other. The peat level is stated at 50 ppm, so the smoky Islay identity is still firmly part of the whisky, but the 16 years of maturation give it more depth and composure.

With 5,000 bottles released, collector's item status and the last bottles now indicated, this Kilchoman has a special place in the Islay selection at Drankenshop Broekmans. It is not just a limited bottle; it marks a mature moment for the distillery.

About KILCHOMAN

Kilchoman started producing whisky in 2005. It was the first time in many decades that another new distillery opened on the mythical island of Islay. More so, now, almost 20 years later, it has emerged that Kilchoman was one of the first of a huge wave of new Scottish distilleries - more than 50 have joined in recent years. That Kilchoman would be a keeper was written in the stars. From the outset, what stood out was how the focus was always on quality first, without compromise. Those compliments are for Anthony Wills, the Englishman who dared to start something new. Together with his two sons, he has since built Kilchoman into a fixture on the whisky landscape, and the distillery has steadily expanded in terms of production capacity. Currently, they can produce up to 650,000 litres there on an annual basis, and plans are to grow even further, towards the million mark. We certainly don't mind that, as what is made there is always in taste.

The house style is a firmly-turfed whisky, entirely in the classic Islay style. The basic range consists of the Machir Bay (aged almost entirely in bourbon casks), the Sanaig (about 50/50 bourbon and sherry casks) and the Loch Gorm (mostly sherry cask). There is also the 100% Islay, for which they work with barley grown exclusively on Islay, and the Batch Strength, a recent addition at a higher alcohol content. Kilchoman single casks are always an adventure, as there is no shying away from experimenting with special cask maturities like tequila, Sauternes, Madeira or STR (Shave, Toast, Rechar). This makes Kilchoman products favourites of whisky connoisseurs.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Kilchoman 16y?

Kilchoman 16y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Kilchoman 16y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Kilchoman 16y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Kilchoman 16y a single cask whisky?

No, Kilchoman 16y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Kilchoman 16y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Kilchoman 16y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Kilchoman 16y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Kilchoman 16y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Kilchoman 16y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Kilchoman 16y a whisky to invest in?

Kilchoman 16y is a whisky of Kilchoman that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Is Kilchoman 16y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Kilchoman 16y can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a smoky character. Indeed, the peat flavour is quite prominent in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this peatiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Kilchoman 16y a tarred whisky?

Yes, Kilchoman 16y is a whisky with a reasonably peated flavour profile: the smokiness of this whisky will be unmistakable with every sip. However, it is more moderate than in the most intensely peated whisky.

Peaty, smoky or peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love.

Is Kilchoman 16y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Kilchoman 16y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Kilchoman 16y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Kilchoman 16y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Kilchoman 16y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Kilchoman 16y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Kilchoman 16y have a high alcohol content?

Kilchoman 16y is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Kilchoman 16y an independent bottling?

No, Kilchoman 16y is an official bottling of Kilchoman.

Is Kilchoman 16y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Kilchoman 16y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Kilchoman 16y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Kilchoman 16y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Kilchoman 16y whisky from Kilchoman is not an organic product.

Can I buy Kilchoman 16y without deploying loyalty tokens?

Kilchoman 16y is one whisky which is part of our loyalty programme. That means you have to use loyalty tokens to buy this bottle. Without the necessary loyalty tokens, you cannot order this bottle from us, not even at an additional price or by contacting us by e-mail. On principle, we do not make any exceptions to our programme.

In the past, loyal Broekmans customers were often left out in the cold because bottles like this one were immediately bought up by bottle flippers. True fans and lovers of our products were therefore condemned to the much more expensive second-hand market. With this loyalty programme, every customer who consistently chooses Broekmans has the opportunity to build up a token balance, and with those accumulated credits they can then grant themselves access to unique and rare bottlings like this one.

Thus, as an whiskyenthusiast who consistently chooses Broekmans has more than an edge over anyone who is only concerned with capitalising on it rather than from a deep-seated passion.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
