Product info about Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl

Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co is a Belgian grain whisky with a very defined identity: one cask, ten years of maturation and a cask strength bottling. The 62.9° stated in the name immediately points to a whisky presented with real intensity, rather than softened into a broader house style.

Its Cognac-matured cask background gives this release a distinctive angle within Belgian whisky. Distilled in 2010 and bottled in 2021, it was drawn from a limited outturn of 446 bottles, making it less about consistency from batch to batch and more about one particular cask at one particular point in time.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we place in front of customers who enjoy discovering Belgian whisky with a clear cask identity and a stronger, more direct presentation. With the last bottles now indicated, the release also carries the feeling of a chapter that is gradually coming to a close.

The stated flavour profile places fruit and spice at the centre, with lighter floral and wood accents in support. Bottling at cask strength gives the whisky a firm, forceful presence.

Peat and salinity are not part of the provided profile, so the focus remains on fruit, spice and the influence of the Cognac-matured cask.

About BRAECKMAN

Braeckman is a Belgian brand that has mainly established a name in the world of jenever and grain distillates, but in recent years has also focused on whisky. The distillery is located in Oudenaarde, a city in East Flanders with a rich tradition in grain distillation. Braeckman started as a family business around the beginning of the twentieth century, with a focus on artisanally distilled jenevers and liqueurs, and is still independent and family-owned. For their whisky, they use their own distillation installations in which traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques come together. As for the Belgian whisky, the range is small-scale and usually consists of single grain and single malt whisky, produced on the basis of carefully selected grains and often matured in oak barrels. Braeckman whisky is characterized by a soft and accessible character, which is partly due to the experience the distillery has built up in working with grains and aging on wood. With the move to whisky, Braeckman adds a new dimension to their well-known distillation heritage, with a clear focus on authenticity and local production.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl?

Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl is a grain whisky .

Grain whisky is made from a grain other than barley, such as wheat and/or maize. It is distilled in fairly large-scale column stills, also known as distillery columns.

As with malt whisky, in this category you also have 'single grain' whisky that comes from just one distillery, and 'blended' whisky that comes from multiple distilleries. Both variants are not very common.

Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl a single cask whisky?

Yes, Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl een goede keuze voor mij?

This Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl a spicy whisky?

Yes, Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl a fruity whisky?

Yes, Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl an independent bottling?

No, Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl is an official bottling of Braeckman.

Is Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Braeckman Single Grain 2010 10y Co 62,9° 50cl is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Belgium it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.
