Flavour notes

The aroma opens in a clearly tropical register, with guava, unripe mango and soft banana, followed by vanilla pod and warm teak. It stays bright rather than heavy, with fruit, wood and gentle spice sitting side by side.

On the palate it is clean and oily. Lime leaf brings freshness, while white chocolate and canned pineapple add a rounder fruit sweetness. A touch of green peppercorn gives the middle palate a sharper lift.

The finish carries salted papaya and lingering ester warmth, keeping the tropical character alive right through the aftertaste.

Product info about Diamond 2003 22y

Diamond 2003 22y is a Guyanese molasses rum with a very clear sense of place: Diamond Distillery on the Demerara River. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we would point out for its focus rather than for any broad commercial style. Berry Bros & Rudd bottled it in the Odyssey Range as a single cask at cask strength.

The rum comes from Cask #49, distilled in 2003 and bottled after 22 years in a bourbon barrel. With only 234 bottles drawn, it is a tightly defined release: one cask, one long maturation, and a natural strength of 57.4%. That gives the bottle a very specific identity rather than the broader feel of a blended expression.

Its background is part of the fascination. Diamond is the last remaining distillery in Guyana and works with column stills as well as pot stills, including traditional wooden pot stills. This rum was distilled on the Versailles wooden pot still, a detail that fits neatly with the spirit-driven, tropical style described in the tasting notes.

With the last bottles now available, this Diamond is best understood as a precise Demerara snapshot: limited, expressive, oily in texture and firmly rooted in Guyana's wooden still tradition.

The aroma opens in a clearly tropical register, with guava, unripe mango and soft banana, followed by vanilla pod and warm teak. It stays bright rather than heavy, with fruit, wood and gentle spice sitting side by side.

About DIAMOND

The Diamond Distillery is located on the bank of the Demerara River, near Georgetown, Guyana. It is home to Demerara Distillers Limited. It is the last remaining distillery in Guyana, even though there is a long and rich history of rum production here. It is the distillery where El Dorado Rum is made and is particularly popular with independent bottlers, because the rums produced here each have a unique flavor profile with very rich and intense flavors.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of rum is Diamond 2003 22y?

Diamond 2003 22y is a mélasse rum .

Molasses is fermented and distilled, after which the rum can be aged in barrels. Molasses is a by-product of sugar production and contains many sugars that are converted into alcohol and complex flavourings during fermentation.

Is Diamond 2003 22y a no age statement rum (NAS)?

No, Diamond 2003 22y is not a no age statement (NAS) rum. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest rum found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Diamond 2003 22y a single cask rum?

Yes, Diamond 2003 22y is a single cask rum. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Diamond 2003 22y a rum at cask strength?

Yes, Diamond 2003 22y is a rum cask strength. A cask strength rum is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Diamond 2003 22y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Diamond 2003 22y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular rum combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced rum-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Diamond 2003 22y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Diamond 2003 22y a spicy rum?

On its own, yes, but this Diamond 2003 22y is one rum with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this rum is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Diamond 2003 22y a fruity rum?

On its own, yes, but Diamond 2003 22y is a rum with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this rum is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Is Diamond 2003 22y a sweet rum?

By itself, yes, but the sweetness in this Diamond 2003 22y rum is only slightly present in the flavour profile.

Sweet rum is usually the most accessible version. Because that pronounced sweetness is missing here, it may be a rum that does not strike a mainstream chord with everyone.

Do you drink Diamond 2003 22y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Diamond 2003 22y rum best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to rum. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your rum, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Diamond 2003 22y have a high alcohol content?

Rum of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength rum (a rum cask strength): the rum in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Rum with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Diamond 2003 22y an independent bottling?

Diamond 2003 22y is a rum of the Diamond brand bottled by the independent bottler Berry Bros. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Diamond 2003 22y a solera rum?

No, Diamond 2003 22y is not produced according to the solera system.

Is Diamond 2003 22y suitable for making a Dark 'n Stormy cocktail?

The "Dark 'n Stormy" cocktail is a protected trademark of Gosling Brothers Ltd. According to official rules, a cocktail may therefore only be called Dark 'N Stormy (with one apostrophe) if it is made with Gosling's Rum and ginger beer.

Since Gosling only registered the name with single apostrophe, the same cocktail is also described elsewhere as a Dark 'n' Stormy (with double apostrophe) or as a Safe Harbor in an attempt to get out from under the trademark and licensing problems.

If you don't mind the official designation and want to make a cocktail based on the recipe of the official Dark 'n Stormy, this Diamond 2003 22y is definitely a good choice. To make an official, correct Dark 'n Stormy, however, you need Gosling's Black Seal rum.

Is Diamond 2003 22y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Diamond 2003 22y a biological rum?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Diamond 2003 22y rum from Diamond is not an organic product.
