Product info about Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l

Planteray Barbados 5y 1.75l presents a Barbados rum with a generous bottle size and a clearly defined house style. It is made from a blend of pot still and column still rum from Stade's West Indies Rum Distillery, founded in 1893 by George Stade. That combination gives the rum an easy-going feel while still keeping enough shape and spice to remain interesting.

The maturation story is central here. The rum first spends three years ageing beside the beach in Barbados. The casks then travel by sea to France, developing further through what Planteray describes as dynamic ageing. A second maturation in ex-Ferrand casks, with a cognac finish, brings the total ageing to five years and adds roundness and structure.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Barbados rum we like to present when someone is looking for fruit, gentle sweetness and spice in a style that remains clean and approachable. The 1.75l format also makes it a practical choice when the bottle is meant to be enjoyed over more than just a few servings.

The aroma is fresh and expressive, showing ripe banana, brown sugar, vanilla and a light touch of spice. On the palate it stays soft and relatively light, with tropical fruit, citrus and caramel coming through clearly.

The finish is short and clean, leaving gentle spicy notes and a subtle hint of liquorice.

About PLANTERAY (PLANTATION)

Planteray Rums has set out to introduce the world to rums from everywhere. Each place where rums are made has its specific terroir, its specific way of making rums and therefore its own style and flavour profile. This has been slowly developed through centuries of tradition and by local communities. These are the stories Planteray wants to tell with the rums they bottle.

Planteray's story started more than 25 years ago. Alexandre Gabriel started the company then and is still the master blender. He travels the world in search of rums worth discovering, makes local connections and ensures they are bottled in a sustainable way and distributed around the world. Planteray's approach was revolutionary at the outset and yet rooted in tradition: their technique of 'double maturation' gives the rums bottled by Planteray a unique character. This is how it was done long ago - rums were transported in their original maturation barrels (where they had sat for several years in tropical climates) and matured further in the fresher continental climate of Europe. At Planteray, they have the advantage of being able to use exquisite cognac barrels from parent house Maison Ferrand. This technique was perfected by Planteray and has since been adopted back by many other modern bottlers.

Planteray's range is particularly wide: rums from all corners of our globe, from young to very old, in all styles and for every budget. Definitely worth browsing through as a rum lover!

No, Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l is not a no age statement (NAS) rum. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest rum found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l a single cask rum?

Is Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular rum combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced rum-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l een goede keuze voor mij?

This Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l can be a rum that suits you if you like a rum with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this rum.

Is Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l a spicy rum?

Yes, Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l is a rum with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this rum will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l a fruity rum?

Yes, Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l is a rum with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this rum will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Is Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l a sweet rum?

By itself, yes, but the sweetness in this Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l rum is only slightly present in the flavour profile.

Sweet rum is usually the most accessible version. Because that pronounced sweetness is missing here, it may be a rum that does not strike a mainstream chord with everyone.

Do you drink Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l rum best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to rum. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your rum, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l have a high alcohol content?

This rum from Planteray (plantation) has a normal alcohol content. Within rum alcohol levels of up to 43% are most common.

Is Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l a solera rum?

No, Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l is not produced according to the solera system.

Is Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l suitable for making a Dark 'n Stormy cocktail?

The "Dark 'n Stormy" cocktail is a protected trademark of Gosling Brothers Ltd. According to official rules, a cocktail may therefore only be called Dark 'N Stormy (with one apostrophe) if it is made with Gosling's Rum and ginger beer.

Since Gosling only registered the name with single apostrophe, the same cocktail is also described elsewhere as a Dark 'n' Stormy (with double apostrophe) or as a Safe Harbor in an attempt to get out from under the trademark and licensing problems.

If you don't mind the official designation and want to make a cocktail based on the recipe of the official Dark 'n Stormy, this Planteray Barbados 5y 1,75l is definitely a good choice. To make an official, correct Dark 'n Stormy, however, you need Gosling's Black Seal rum.
