About REY CAMPERO
The palenque (or distillery) of Rey Campero stands on a sacred place, the Candelaria Yegolë. Only about 100 people live there and few among them are young. Unfortunately, most of the younger generation have moved away in search of a better life. There, in this impressive and rugged place, nature has scattered the ravines and slopes of the hills with the most beautiful agave plants. The Sanchez distillery, located in this corner of Oaxaca, has been in operation for more than seven decades, and its masters make mezcal. Their knowledge has given them the experience to understand and respect the land, the water, and the fire. For some years now, this family of mezcaleros has been sharing their knowledge and have employed several people from the community and more recently from villages in the region. In this palenque, not only is mezcal distilled, but friendships are also forged to rebuild the community fabric and keep the tradition of mezcal alive.
