About UNICUM
Unicum is a Hungarian herbal liqueur produced by Zwack, a family business with a rich history that dates back to the end of the 18th century. This distinctive bitter from Budapest is made according to a secret recipe that, according to legend, contains more than forty herbs. The precise composition is strictly guarded, which adds to the mystery and reputation of the drink. The first Unicum is said to have been made in 1790 by Dr. Zwack for the Habsburg emperor Joseph II, after which the drink became a national symbol. Unicum matures for several months in oak barrels, which gives it its complex, characteristic flavor and dark color. Over time, the brand has released several variants, but the original Unicum is known for its pronounced herbal, bitter, and slightly sweet notes. The brand is often drunk as a digestif, but it is also popular as an aperitif in Hungary and beyond.
