Altano White Riserva 2023 presents the Douro from a polished white-wine angle, with more depth than a straightforward fresh white. Symington works here with grapes from high-altitude vineyards, planted between 500 and 600 metres. That cooler setting helps the wine keep its acidity, lift and balance.Viosinho forms the core of the blend, supported by Códega do Larinho, Arinto, Gouveio and Rabigato. These native white Douro varieties give the wine its aromatic detail, structure and sense of freshness.
The winemaking adds another layer. Part of the wine is fermented in stainless steel, while the rest is fermented and aged for 11 months on the lees in French and Hungarian oak barrels, with a subtle touch of acacia wood. It keeps its freshness, yet gains volume, softness and a more layered feel.
