Château Coutet 2021 Barsac Magnum is a noble sweet white Bordeaux from Barsac, a commune within the Sauternes area that may use its own appellation. This is the grand vin of Château Coutet, a Premier Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification, presented here in a 1.5-litre magnum rather than as a separate cuvée.The 2021 vintage is made from 75% sémillon, 23% sauvignon blanc and 2% muscadelle. Its depth comes from grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, harvested between 30 September and 18 October. The picking was carried out in four successive manual passages over 13 harvest days, allowing the estate to select fruit according to ripeness and noble rot. Fermentation took place in barrel, followed by 18 months in French oak.
It was a demanding year in Barsac and Sauternes, marked by spring frost and a much smaller crop. Later in the season, September rain, misty mornings and sunny October afternoons created the conditions for noble rot. The available tasting reports consistently point to a 2021 with sweetness and texture, but also notable freshness, tension and precision.
