Chateau Saint-Pierre 2021 is a red, dry wine from Pomerol in Bordeaux, made from 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc. This is the Pomerol estate, not the Saint-Julien property of the same name, and the wine comes from plots on the Pomerol plateau, where sandy-gravel soils and crasse de fer form part of the estate's setting.The 2021 vintage was a demanding one in Pomerol, marked by frost, disease pressure and fewer hours of sunshine than the warmer preceding years. For Chateau Saint-Pierre, that made the blend particularly important. Merlot remained the main grape, while cabernet franc took on a meaningful role in bringing structure and ripeness to the final wine.
In the cellar, the wine was vinified by individual plot and aged in a mix of 500-litre casks, 225-litre barriques and amphorae. It is a considered approach rather than a showy one, giving the wine space to express the freshness and fruit character of the year.
