Flavour notes

Deep crimson in colour, with a pronounced aromatic presence. The nose brings blueberry, goji berry and loganberry, followed by chocolate, hazelnut, liquorice, crème brûlée and an earthy, iron-like Barossa nuance. Other tasting notes mention black cherry, cassis, cedar, mocha, graphite, herbs and black olive.

On the palate, it is full-bodied and densely structured, with red and dark fruit such as redcurrant, blackberry, red cherry and red plum. Cocoa, refined vanilla, baking spices, star anise and liquorice add further layers. The tannins are described as powdery, silky and velvety, carrying the wine into a long finish.

Product info about Penfolds Rwt Bin 798 2018

Penfolds RWT Bin 798 2018 is a Barossa Valley Shiraz with a clearly defined role in the Penfolds range. RWT stands for Red Winemaking Trial, the internal project name under which the wine was developed from 1995. First released with the 1997 vintage, it was conceived as a Barossa Shiraz matured exclusively in French oak.

The 2018 growing season in Barossa Valley was warm and dry, providing favourable ripening conditions for Shiraz. Penfolds describes the wine as rich, meaty and concentrated, with strong aromatic intensity and a soft, full texture. Sixteen months in French oak hogsheads, including a substantial proportion of new oak, adds depth while keeping the Barossa fruit firmly at the centre.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we place in front of customers looking for a serious Australian red with origin, structure and ageing potential. Penfolds gives a drinking window from 2022 to 2050, suggesting a wine that can already be approached yet still has a long life ahead. As these are our last bottles, the 2018 vintage is becoming increasingly scarce.

The strong critical reception for this release, with scores reaching 99 points, reflects the stature of the wine: a dark, concentrated Barossa Shiraz shaped by ripe fruit, savoury depth, French oak influence and the capacity to continue developing in bottle.

About PENFOLDS

Penfolds is one of the best-known names in the Australian wine world and was founded in 1844 by Doctor Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary in Magill, near Adelaide in South Australia. Over the years, the brand developed from a modest vineyard into an international winery with a broad range, varying from approachable, fruity wines to complex top cuvées. Penfolds is especially known for its Grange, one of the most famous wines of Australia, which has been made since the 1950s and is considered worldwide as a benchmark for Australian Shiraz. In addition to Shiraz, Penfolds also works a lot with grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Riesling, sourced from various wine regions such as the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, and Eden Valley. The philosophy behind the brand is based on blending grapes from different vineyards and regions, contributing to the house style of power, structure, and balance. Penfolds has been involved in innovations within the Australian wine industry since the beginning and still uses both traditional and contemporary vinification methods. Today, the brand is part of Treasury Wine Estates, one of the largest wine companies in the world, but maintaining quality and character remains central at Penfolds.
