Flavour notes

The colour is plum red with a crimson rim. Aromatically, it is dark and concentrated, with blackberry, mulberry, blackcurrant, dark plum, pomegranate and cranberry, followed by liquorice, roasted fennel seed, dried mint and mild capsicum.

More savoury notes add depth: bresaola, prosciutto, roasted meat, old leather, olive, earth, mushroom, flint and tar-like tones. The palate is dry, full and firmly structured, with mouth-watering acidity, fine salinity, graphite-like tension, a creamy element and very fine dark-cocoa tannins. The finish is persistent, spicy and savoury, with dark fruit carrying through.

Product info about Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2019

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2019 is a South Australian red with a very deliberate sense of style. Within the Penfolds range, St Henri stands apart as a Shiraz that does not rely on new oak for its identity. Instead, the focus is on fruit, structure and the character of a multi-regional blend.

The 2019 vintage brings together Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and The Peninsulas. It was a warm year, with lower than average yields and fruit noted for good colour, firm tannins and intense flavour. Twelve months in large, seasoned oak casks kept the oak influence restrained, allowing the wine's dark fruit, savoury depth and natural tension to remain at the centre.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of wine we like to present to customers who are curious about top Australian Shiraz beyond the more overtly oak-driven style. The 2019 has received strong recognition from respected wine critics, yet its real appeal lies in the glass: concentrated, structured, dry and layered with ripe fruit, spice and savoury detail.

It is a serious red for dishes with enough flavour to meet it, such as beef, venison, lamb or other red meat. Availability is now limited.

About PENFOLDS

Penfolds is one of the best-known names in the Australian wine world and was founded in 1844 by Doctor Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary in Magill, near Adelaide in South Australia. Over the years, the brand developed from a modest vineyard into an international winery with a broad range, varying from approachable, fruity wines to complex top cuvées. Penfolds is especially known for its Grange, one of the most famous wines of Australia, which has been made since the 1950s and is considered worldwide as a benchmark for Australian Shiraz. In addition to Shiraz, Penfolds also works a lot with grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Riesling, sourced from various wine regions such as the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, and Eden Valley. The philosophy behind the brand is based on blending grapes from different vineyards and regions, contributing to the house style of power, structure, and balance. Penfolds has been involved in innovations within the Australian wine industry since the beginning and still uses both traditional and contemporary vinification methods. Today, the brand is part of Treasury Wine Estates, one of the largest wine companies in the world, but maintaining quality and character remains central at Penfolds.
