Quinta Da Fonte Alicante Bouchet 2018 is a Portuguese red wine with a very focused idea behind it: one grape variety, one separately selected lot and a limited bottling of around 6,000 bottles. At Quinta da Fonte Souto, the Symington Family Estates property in Portalegre, this kind of varietal release is only made when a particular lot stands out clearly in a given vintage.The grapes come from three older vineyards, all over 25 years old, planted at just above 500 metres at the foot of the Serra de São Mamede. That setting is central to the wine's identity. The altitude helps preserve freshness and balance, while the older, low-yielding vines bring structure and concentration. Harvesting was done by hand in small crates, followed by manual sorting and carefully managed fermentation for each lot.
Maturation was handled with restraint: 80% of the wine spent 14 months in second-use 400-litre French oak barrels. The aim is support rather than domination, giving shape to the wine while allowing the dark fruit and savoury depth to remain central. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the sort of bottle we would place among serious gastronomic reds with a clear sense of origin and vintage selection.
The 2018 release also received strong recognition, including 93 points from Wine Enthusiast and 93 points from James Suckling. With only a limited number produced and the last bottles now available, it has the feel of a very specific snapshot from Quinta da Fonte Souto.
