Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio Riserva 2016 Magnum is very much a wine of origin. It comes from the historic Cerequio cru in Piedmont, between La Morra and Barolo, with nebbiolo sourced from a specific 0.90-hectare parcel planted in 1972. The site sits at around 350 metres, facing south-west, on calcareous marl and clay of marine sedimentary origin.

Michele Chiarlo produces this Riserva only in exceptional vintages, and 2016 is described by the estate as a classic, high-quality year. The grapes reached even ripeness, supported in the final stage by sunny days and cool nights. After fermentation in wooden vats and 30 days of skin contact with submerged cap, the wine matured for at least six years: around three years in large wooden casks, followed by three years in bottle.

Floral notes of rose and violet sit alongside mint, eucalyptus, balsamic tones and fine spice, with clove adding a more defined aromatic edge.

On the palate it is dry, full and firmly structured, with pronounced yet polished tannins and fresh acidity. A silky texture carries layers of red fruit, chocolate, tea, leather, dry earth, incense, graphite-like or stony minerality and truffle-like nuances.
