Flavour notes

The tasting profile is led by dark fruit: cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry and plum all appear in the available notes. Around that core come floral hints of violet, lilac and rose oil, followed by deeper accents of sandalwood, tobacco, graphite, mocha, incense, smoke, cedar and spices.

On the palate, Château Cos d'Estournel 2016 is described as concentrated and muscular, yet fresh and precise. The tannins are ripe, dense and fine-grained. The finish is long, carrying dark fruit, floral detail, spice, mineral tension and a firm but integrated structure.

Product info about Chateau Cos D'estournel 2016

Château Cos d'Estournel 2016 is the grand vin of this Saint-Estèphe estate in the northern Médoc. It is a red Bordeaux blend built primarily on cabernet sauvignon, with merlot and a small touch of cabernet franc. The vineyard setting is central to the wine: the estate describes its site as a hill of pebbles, with deep gravel, clay-limestone sections and grapes for the first wine coming from older vines.

The 2016 vintage was shaped by a cold, wet spring followed by a hot, dry summer. Rain on 13 September was considered important by the estate for continued ripening, before harvest took place from late September to mid-October. The wine spent 15 months in French oak barrels, with a significant share of new oak, while the style is described as structured and precise rather than excessively opulent.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is one of those Bordeaux bottles that immediately invites a more thoughtful conversation. The 2016 release received outstanding recognition from several international critics, including perfect scores from some of them. With only the last bottles remaining, it is a wine for those looking for a serious Saint-Estèphe with depth, ageing potential and a clear sense of origin.

For young vintages after 2015, the château recommends decanting for at least two hours. A serving temperature of 15 to 16°C is advised. In terms of food, the estate points to a rich pairing with beef shoulder in a reduced Thai sauce, a useful indication of the kind of concentrated flavours this wine can stand beside.

About CH COS D'ESTOURNEL

Château Cos d'Estournel is a renowned winery from the French Bordeaux region, specifically located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the Médoc. The estate was founded in the early 19th century by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, who dedicated himself to producing complex and characterful wines exclusively from his own vineyards. Cos d'Estournel is known as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé since the famous 1855 classification, in which it was counted among the top of the region. The winery covers about 100 hectares and has been expanded and modernized during various periods, but the distinctive Asian-inspired architecture and the impressive gatehouse are still iconic. The wine of Château Cos d'Estournel is traditionally characterized by a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented by Merlot and occasionally small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This results in a powerful, structured wine that ages well and develops complexity over the years. In addition to the Grand Vin, the estate also produces a second wine, Les Pagodes de Cos, which is more accessible in its youth. Cos d'Estournel is appreciated worldwide by lovers of classic Bordeaux, thanks in part to its consistent character and aging potential.
