Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2019 is the red Grand Vin of the estate in Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux. What immediately sets this vintage apart is the strong role of Cabernet Franc: 42% of the blend, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. That gives the wine a distinctive identity within its appellation, with aromatic detail, freshness and structure playing a central role.The fruit came from 7.60 hectares of estate vineyards, with vines averaging 42 years of age on gravel over clay-limestone subsoil. Harvesting was carried out entirely by hand between 17 and 29 September. In the cellar, the grapes were not crushed and part of the vinification used whole bunches, followed by a 35-day cuvaison. Ageing lasted 24 months, mainly in new barrels, complemented by foudres and terracotta jars.
The estate described 2019 as a vintage of balance, despite extreme conditions in Bordeaux. That balance is also the key to understanding the wine: concentration and density are present, but they are carried by freshness, fine tannins and a sense of elegance.
