Michele Chiarlo Le Orme Barbera d'Asti 2020 is a Piedmont red wine with Barbera firmly at its core: bright fruit, lively acidity and a natural affinity with Italian food. The grapes are selected from several vineyards in the southern part of the Asti province, including sites in Castelnuovo Calcea, Montaldo Scarampi and Agliano. The light marine sedimentary soils known as Sabbie Astiane are an important part of its identity.The winemaking is designed to keep the fruit clear and expressive. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, with 10 days of skin contact and gentle extraction. The wine then matures for at least 16 months, including a short period in large oak casks, followed by further refinement. That approach gives the wine structure while preserving the fresh, direct character associated with Barbera d'Asti.
The 2020 vintage saw a warm, dry summer without extremes, followed by a mild and dry September, conditions that the producer links to healthy, fully ripe grapes. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Italian red we like for its straightforward table appeal: pasta with tomato sauce, pizza, Livorno-style fish and white meat all sit comfortably alongside it. Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte. The wines of the house are known for their balance and accessibility, and are appreciated worldwide.
