Flavour notes

In the glass, this Barolo shows ruby red colour with garnet reflections. The aroma brings together small red and dark fruits, black cherry, berries, liquorice, sweet tobacco, thyme and mint, with balsamic tones adding extra depth.

On the palate, the producer describes it as enveloping and rich, with body, fullness and silky tannins. GardiniNotes refers to a dense mouthfeel, saline tannins and a finish where fruit and balsamic notes return. It remains clearly structured, while the 2017 vintage is also described as showing soft, well-integrated tannins at a young stage.

Product info about Mc Barolo Cannubi 2017 Dubbele Magnum (3l)

Michele Chiarlo Barolo DOCG Cannubi 2017 in double magnum is the kind of bottle that immediately sets a particular tone. The 3-litre format already suggests a shared occasion, but the deeper interest lies in its origin: Cannubi, described by the producer as one of Barolo's best-known and historically oldest crus, with references dating back to 1752.

This red wine from Piedmont is made from nebbiolo grown in the Cannubi vineyard in the commune of Barolo. Michele Chiarlo has owned a parcel there since 1989, around one hectare in size, with vines planted in 1958 and 1990. The site sits at about 240 metres altitude, faces south to south-west, and is rooted in calcareous marl soils with sand and micro-elements such as iron and magnesium.

The 2017 vintage was shaped by a long summer and very little rainfall. In the vineyard, the estate worked to preserve freshness in the grapes, avoiding direct sun exposure on the bunches and bringing the harvest forward by around ten days. The grapes were picked by hand between 25 September and 2 October. Fermentation and maceration took place in oak vats over 20 days, followed by at least three years of ageing, including two years in medium-sized oak casks.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this bottle stands out through the combination of cru Barolo, the 2017 vintage and the double magnum format. Michele Chiarlo positions Cannubi as a wine made only in good years and in limited quantities, and that sense of select production feels even more pronounced in this size. The producer suggests serving it with roast dishes, tagliolini with truffle, game and well-aged cheeses.

The wines of the house are known for their balance and accessibility, and are appreciated worldwide. Nowadays, the company is still led by the Chiarlo family, with the next generation actively involved in the management and preservation of the family tradition.
