Flavour notes

In the glass, the wine shows a ruby to garnet-red colour with bright reflections. Aromatically it moves through small red and dark fruits, black cherry, ripe black fruit and raspberry, followed by liquorice, sweet tobacco, truffle and leather. Thyme, mint and balsamic notes add a more savoury edge.

The palate is described as rich and enveloping, with body and volume. The tannins are silky and polished, with an earthy, spiced dimension towards the finish. Tasting notes also mention raspberry jam, blood orange and vanilla, adding ripe fruit sweetness alongside the darker and more balsamic tones.

Product info about Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cannubi 2017 Magnum (1,5l)

Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cannubi 2017 Magnum brings together one of Barolo's most historic cru names with the generous presence of a 1.5 litre bottle. This red Barolo DOCG comes from Cannubi in the village of Barolo and is made from nebbiolo grown on Michele Chiarlo's own Cannubi parcel, held by the estate since 1989.

The parcel covers about one hectare in the historical heart of Cannubi. It sits at around 240 metres on a steep terraced slope, facing south to south-west, with calcareous marl soils that include sand, iron and magnesium. The 2017 growing season was marked by a long, very dry summer. In response, the estate worked carefully in the vineyard to preserve freshness in the grapes, including avoiding leaf removal and harvesting by hand slightly earlier than usual.

Fermentation and maceration took place in oak vats over twenty days, followed by a total ageing period of at least three years, including two years in medium-sized oak casks and further bottle maturation. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Barolo we like to present to customers who appreciate a named cru with a clear sense of place, especially in magnum format. With only the last bottles remaining, it also carries the quiet appeal of a limited release from a specific vintage.

The 2017 Cannubi has been well received by several critics, including Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, Wine & Spirits, James Suckling and Luca Gardini. The producer suggests serving it at 18 °C with roasts, tagliolini with truffle, game or well-aged cheeses. More information about the estate can be found at https://www.michelechiarlo.it/

Michele Chiarlo is an Italian wine producer from Piemonte, founded in 1956 by Michele Chiarlo himself. The family company has been active since the beginning in one of the most highly regarded wine regions of Northern Italy, and has strongly focused on producing wines that reflect the character of the region. The vineyards of Michele Chiarlo are mainly located in the most famous Piemontese zones, including Barolo and Barbaresco for the red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, but also in regions such as Asti for Barbera and Moscato, among others. Quality and terroir are central in the winery's approach; a lot of attention is paid to sustainable viticultural practices and a careful selection of grapes. The assortment of Michele Chiarlo ranges from fresh, floral white wines to structured, complex red wines that are typical for Piemonte. The wines of the house are known for their balance and accessibility, and are appreciated worldwide. Nowadays, the company is still led by the Chiarlo family, with the next generation actively involved in the management and preservation of the family tradition.
