Mandrarossa Timperosse 2021 shows a less obvious side of Sicilian red wine. It comes from Menfi in southern Sicily and is made entirely from Petit Verdot, a grape that stands out within the local landscape. That is exactly the idea behind Mandrarossa's Innovativi range: familiar Sicilian origins, approached through less conventional varieties.The grapes are grown on south-facing hillside vineyards around Menfi, on calcareous and sandy soils at roughly 100 to 250 metres above sea level. Fermentation is short and temperature-controlled, followed by four months in stainless steel. With no oak ageing mentioned, the focus stays on fruit, freshness and a direct expression of the grape.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Sicilian red with plenty of flavour but without unnecessary weight. Its ripe red and dark fruit, Mediterranean herbal notes and soft tannins make it easy to place at the table, from cheeses and roast chicken to seared tuna or fuller vegetarian dishes. Mandrarossa is a wine brand from Sicily, Italy, and is part of Cantine Settesoli, a coöperative that has been active since 1958 in the Menfi region in the southwestern part of the island. The brand was introduced in the early 2000s and focuses on producing wines that reflect the character of Sicilian terroirs. Mandrarossa uses both indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola, Grillo and Fiano, as well as international varietals including Chardonnay and Merlot.
