Flavour notes
The wine is described as deep red to dark purple in colour. Beneath the fruit sit darker, more savoury accents of rosemary, anise, wild herbs, tar, smoke, graphite, espresso, dark chocolate, roasted chestnut and vanilla.On the palate, the fruit is concentrated and pure, centred on blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum. Fresh acidity keeps the wine lifted, while ripe but present tannins provide structure and a fine-grained texture. The finish is long, with spice, chocolate and subtle oak-derived tones. Product info about Cloudburst Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Cloudburst Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a Margaret River red with a very individual feel. It comes from the Cloudburst estate of owner and winemaker Will Berliner, set on the inland slope of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, close to the Indian Ocean and bordered by bushland.The blend is led almost entirely by Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small proportion of Malbec. The vineyard is densely planted, own-rooted, unirrigated and farmed according to ecological and biodynamic principles, though without certification. In the cellar, the work remains small-scale and hands-on: manual sorting, small open fermenters, wild yeast fermentation, partial whole-bunch fermentation and hand pigeage.
Around 20 to 22 months of oak maturation give the wine room to build depth without losing the freshness and tension noted in several tastings of the 2018 vintage. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this bottle stands out for its very limited production; only 2,888 bottles are mentioned for this vintage, and with the last bottles now available, that sense of scarcity becomes even more tangible.
The 2018 release has been highly regarded by specialist tasters and has also been described as suitable for further bottle ageing. It is a serious, layered Margaret River Cabernet for drinkers who appreciate concentration, structure and careful, low-intervention winemaking.
