Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino 2016 is a dry red Tuscan wine made from Sangiovese grown in Montalcino. The estate lies south of the village on some of the higher vineyard slopes of the appellation, between 480 and 570 metres. Poor, stony and gravel-rich soils help shape a Brunello with ripeness, freshness and the firm structure associated with this highly regarded 2016 vintage.This is Poggio Antico's regular Brunello di Montalcino rather than the Riserva or Altero bottling. It is drawn from different estate parcels and matured for 30 months in large traditional Slavonian oak casks, followed by bottle ageing. That choice keeps the focus away from overt oak and towards Sangiovese itself: fruit, flowers, earthy detail, spice and the architecture Brunello is known for.

The estate focuses on the production of mainly Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino, two renowned Italian red wines made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. Poggio Antico has vineyards situated at about 450 meters above sea level, which contributes to a favorable microclimate and a slow, balanced ripening of the grapes. Since its founding in the 1970s, the winery has developed into an established name within the region, especially because of the careful selection of grapes and the preservation of traditional production methods.
