Flavour notes

In the glass it shows a deep red to crimson colour, with aromas built around dark fruit and floral detail. Mulberry, blackberry, blueberry, dark cherry and plum sit alongside violet, rose, sage, pepper and five spice. French oak brings integrated notes of vanilla, chocolate, espresso and coffee rather than a separate woody impression.

The palate is medium to medium-full in feel, with concentration but also clear freshness. Dark plum, elderberry, mulberry and dense dark fruit are layered with liquorice, tobacco leaf, hoisin, salami and graphite-like notes. The tannins are described as fine, supple and slightly sandy, carried by fresh linear acidity.

The finish is firm and long, with blackberry, bitter chocolate, espresso, vanilla and a chinotto-like bitterness. What stands out most is the combination of dark-fruited depth, spice, floral lift and a tannin structure that feels composed rather than heavy.

Product info about Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 2017

Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 2017 is a dry red wine from Clare Valley in South Australia, made entirely from Shiraz grown in The Armagh vineyard. This is not just a regional label; the wine is tied to a specific site north-west of Clare, with fruit from the original 1968 Shiraz plantings.

The 2017 vintage has an important place in the development of The Armagh. It was matured for 18 months in French oak, and from this vintage onward the wine moved fully away from American oak. After cask selection, only part of the harvest makes it into the final bottling, underlining the selective nature of the wine.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Clare Valley Shiraz for people who appreciate origin, structure and ageing potential more than simple power. The vineyard's sloping site, gravelly soils, sand and clay all form part of the story, while 2017 is described as a cooler year for The Armagh, bringing freshness, floral lift and medium-weight tannins alongside its dark fruit depth.

With the last bottles now in stock, this vintage feels especially worth considering. The producer gives a drinking window from 2026 to 2042, and several critical notes point in the same direction: a wine made for further bottle development, yet already marked by more approachability than some of the more forceful years.
