Flavour notes

The aroma is driven by ripe dark fruit: blackcurrant, plum, dark cherry, blueberries and blackberry compote. Around that fruit sit more delicate notes of raspberry, violet, rose petal and mint, followed by cedar, tobacco, leather, anise, black tea, chocolate and a graphite-like earthy tone.

On the palate, Château Montviel 2019 is concentrated and supple, with a texture that can feel gently creamy. The fruit is ripe while retaining enough freshness, and the tannins range from silky to firm, giving the wine both roundness and structure. The finish carries savoury spice, with subtle wood and toast nuances.

Product info about Chateau Montviel 2019

Château Montviel 2019 is a red Pomerol led by Merlot, with Cabernet Franc adding its own contribution to the blend. It has the familiar Right Bank Bordeaux feel: ripe dark fruit, generous depth and a structure that gives the wine shape rather than simple weight.

The estate covers around 10 hectares of vineyard, spread across several parcels within the Pomerol appellation. That parcel diversity brings together sandy, gravelly, clay and fine gravel soils. For the 2019 vintage, the wine spent 18 months in new French oak barrels. The same year also saw the château install thermoregulated concrete vats and equipment designed to handle the harvest at lower temperatures, allowing more control over maceration and extraction.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a strong choice for someone looking for a serious Pomerol with substance and refinement. The vintage received notable critical recognition, including 95 points from James Suckling and 92 points from Vinous, Wine Spectator and Jeb Dunnuck. Several sources also point to meaningful ageing potential, so the wine can be approached now while still having room to develop further in bottle.

Château Montviel gained renewed momentum after Catherine Péré-Vergé acquired it in 1985, renovating the estate and restructuring the vineyard. Its second wine, La Rose Montviel, allows stricter selection for the grand vin. These are the last bottles with us, making this 2019 a particularly timely choice for anyone following mature and age-worthy Pomerol.

About CH MONTVIEL

Ch Montviel is a winery from the Bordeaux region in France, specifically located in the Pomerol appellation on the right bank of the Dordogne River. The wine estate is among the smaller producers in Pomerol and is known for its distinctive, Merlot-driven wines. The estate comprises approximately 10 hectares of vineyards, planted mainly with Merlot and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Franc. The vineyards are situated on typical Pomerol soils of clay, gravel, and sand, which contributes to the elegant and full style of the wine. Ch Montviel has been managed since the late 1980s by the renowned winewoman Sylvie Cazes, who has also been responsible for other prominent Bordeaux estates. In the cellar, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in oak barrels, with a portion of the wood being renewed annually. The style of Ch Montviel is often described as round, fruity, and with soft tannins, making the estate popular among lovers of approachable yet characterful Bordeaux wines. The winery releases a limited edition each year, which explains why Ch Montviel is sometimes less well-known than some larger Pomerol names, but is certainly appreciated within its segment.
