Our buying advice for Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y

The Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who love the finer single cask whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Islay and was bottled at a cask strength of no less than 60.1%. This powerful and intensely smoky whisky requires a developed palate. We advise beginners not to start with this type of whisky because the profile can be too overwhelming. The price of this single cask whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality make it more than worth it.

Flavour notes

The flavour profile is led by peat, with saltiness and a noticeable wood influence giving it shape and structure. At 60.1% cask strength, it comes across as firm and assertive rather than softened.

Spice and fruit sit in the background, adding support without taking over. The main impression remains one of peated intensity, coastal salinity and cask-driven character.

Product info about Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y

Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is a strongly peated Islay single malt with a direct, uncompromising feel. Bottled by The Nectar as part of the Daily Dram range, it focuses on the personality of one individual cask rather than on a broad house-style presentation.

Distilled on 28 October 2014 and bottled on 1 January 2021, it spent 6 years in cask before being released at 60.1% ABV. That strength is part of the appeal here: this is a cask strength single cask bottling, with a total outturn of just 291 bottles.

The Dechar Rechar cask adds a clear wood presence alongside the salty, peated side of the whisky. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as the kind of bottle that speaks to drinkers looking for a more immediate Islay experience: limited in scale, bold in profile and shaped by one specific cask.

With the last bottles now available, this Daily Dram release feels like a concentrated snapshot of Staoisha at a young age, carried by strength, peat and scarcity.

The flavour profile is led by peat, with saltiness and a noticeable wood influence giving it shape and structure. At 60.1% cask strength, it comes across as firm and assertive rather than softened.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y?

Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a briny character. Indeed, this saltiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this saltiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y a tarred whisky?

Yes, Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is a whisky with an intensely textured flavour profile: you will be able to detect the smokiness of this whisky right from the first sip from your glass. It is a typical characteristic flavour in a particular type whisky that you have to (learn to) love.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y an independent bottling?

Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is a whisky of the Bunnahabhain brand bottled by the independent bottler The Nectar. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2014 6y whisky from Bunnahabhain is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
