Product info about Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar

Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is a more focused reading of this Orkney single malt, drawn from one individual cask rather than built from a broader vatting. Distilled in 2008 and bottled in August 2021, it carries the 12-year age statement shown on the release.

The whisky comes from a sherry hogshead and was bottled at cask strength, at a substantial 66.2% alcohol. That gives the cask a very direct voice. With only 294 bottles produced, this is a tightly limited release that captures one specific maturation rather than a repeated house-style expression.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we place this Highland Park among the bottlings that are worth taking time over, especially for drinkers interested in single cask whisky with real presence. The supplied profile points towards clear wood influence, spice and fruit, with peat playing a lighter supporting role.

As the final bottles are now involved, the sense of scarcity is part of the appeal, but the real interest lies in the whisky itself: Orkney single malt, sherry hogshead maturation, natural strength and a very small outturn brought together in one release.

The flavour profile is led by clear wood influence, spice and fruit, with peat present in a lighter, supporting role. Bottling at cask strength gives this Highland Park a concentrated delivery, while the sherry hogshead forms the main framework of the whisky's character.

About HIGHLAND PARK

Of all Scottish distilleries, Highland Park is the most northernly located, right at the top of the map on the Orkney Islands. It is a wild place full of rugged nature with a rich history, where especially the passage of the Vikings has left major marks. You will therefore find the Viking heritage prominently in the stories and packaging of Highland Park. Since 1798, this distillery has been active in Kirkwall, the capital of the island group. Characteristic are the strong and persistent winds, which make the growth of trees almost impossible. As a result, a very typical kind of peat also developed on the island, which mainly contains heather and little wood. This gives a distinctive flavor to the whisky that Highland Park produces.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar?

Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar a single cask whisky?

Yes, Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar een goede keuze voor mij?

This Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar a spicy whisky?

Yes, Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar a fruity whisky?

Yes, Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar an independent bottling?

No, Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is an official bottling of Highland Park.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Highland Park 2008 12y Nectar whisky from Highland Park is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
