Flavour notes

The profile is firm and expressive, with fruit, spice and peat all clearly present. Wood influence plays a supporting role rather than dominating the whisky, allowing the single cask character to remain direct and well defined.

At 51% ABV it carries good weight and focus. Light floral and salty accents add nuance, while the main impression stays centred on fruit, spice and a noticeable peated edge.

Product info about Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec

Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is a Highland single malt with the focused personality you look for in an independent bottling. Distilled on 27 May 1998 and bottled on 1 August 2021, it spent 23 years in a hogshead before being released by The Single Malts of Scotland for The Nectar. It is bottled at cask strength, at 51% ABV.

Its appeal lies in the precision of the release. This is a single cask whisky, with only 234 bottles drawn from that one cask. With the last bottles now available, it represents a specific mature expression of Ardmore rather than a broad house-style vatting.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, bottlings like this are valued for the way they show a distillery from a more individual angle. Here the emphasis falls on mature Highland malt with clearly present fruit, spice and peat, carried by the strength and definition of a single cask release.

About ARDMORE

Ardmore is a distillery in the Highlands that is often somewhat forgotten. The whisky produced there has, from the very beginning (1898), been a component of the immensely popular Teacher's blended Scotch, and the popularity as a single malt has recently increased significantly. In the last 10 years, sales have gone up by 300%. Ardmore is also the only distillery in the Highlands that has consistently produced peated whisky from the very start. It is a medium peated whisky with a phenol content of 12-14 ppm, and they mainly use local peat to dry the malt.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec?

Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec a single cask whisky?

Yes, Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a smoky character. Indeed, the peat flavour is quite prominent in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this peatiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec a tarred whisky?

Yes, Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is a whisky with a reasonably peated flavour profile: the smokiness of this whisky will be unmistakable with every sip. However, it is more moderate than in the most intensely peated whisky.

Peaty, smoky or peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love.

Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec a spicy whisky?

Yes, Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec a fruity whisky?

Yes, Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec have a high alcohol content?

Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec an independent bottling?

Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is a whisky of the Ardmore brand bottled by the independent bottler The Single Malts of Scotland. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ardmore 1998 23y Smsnec is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
