Our buying advice for Fary Lochan 2014

The Fary Lochan 2014 is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who love a premium single cask whisky. This whisky comes from Denmark and was bottled at a cask strength of no less than 60,9%. This powerful and intensely smoky whisky requires a developed palate. We do not recommend beginners to start with this type of whisky because the profile can be too overwhelming. The price of this single cask whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality more than make up for it.

Product info about Fary Lochan 2014

Fary Lochan 2014 is a Danish single malt with a very direct way of presenting itself. Bottled by Berry Bros as part of the Nordic Casks series, it comes at cask strength, carrying 60.9% alcohol. Rather than smoothing everything down, this release keeps the focus on intensity and on the individual cask behind the whisky.

The whisky was distilled in 2014 and bottled in 2021 from a single hogshead, with only 243 bottles drawn from that cask. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottling that stands out for drinkers who enjoy whisky with a clear origin and a narrowly defined identity: one cask, one limited release, one particular expression of Fary Lochan.

Its profile is led by a pronounced peated character, with fruit present as a clear supporting element. The high strength gives the whisky a firm, concentrated feel, while the limited outturn and last-bottle status add to the sense that this is a small, specific release rather than a widely available standard bottling.

About FARY LOCHAN

For years, Jens-Erik Jørgensen dreamed of creating a Danish whisky that was unique in taste and quality - a Danish whisky that would stand out both in the big picture and in the smallest details. Jens-Erik, who grew up on the small island of Funen, found inspiration in the memories of Funen cheese that his mother used to smoke over fresh nettles. So one day, with these memories in mind, he walked in the woods, picked fresh nettles, brought them home and made the first experiments with smoking his whisky malt. In 2009 he was able to fill his very first cask of single malt whisky - a truly unique first cask. With his first sips of the drink, he could taste the smoke from the nettles. The flavor was peated, oily and full. That first sip was the beginning of Fary Lochan. Now Fary Lochan is a family business that makes more than whisky; for example, they also have gin, aquavit, and liqueurs in their assortment.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Fary Lochan 2014?

Fary Lochan 2014 is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Fary Lochan 2014 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Fary Lochan 2014 a single cask whisky?

Yes, Fary Lochan 2014 is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Fary Lochan 2014 is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Fary Lochan 2014 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Fary Lochan 2014 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Fary Lochan 2014 can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a smoky character. Indeed, the peat flavour is quite prominent in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this peatiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 a tarred whisky?

Yes, Fary Lochan 2014 is a whisky with an intensely textured flavour profile: you will be able to detect the smokiness of this whisky right from the first sip from your glass. It is a typical characteristic flavour in a particular type whisky that you have to (learn to) love.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 a spicy whisky?

No, in the flavour profile of this Fary Lochan 2014 whisky there is very little to no significant spiciness at all.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 a fruity whisky?

Yes, Fary Lochan 2014 is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Fary Lochan 2014 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Fary Lochan 2014 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Fary Lochan 2014 have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 an independent bottling?

Fary Lochan 2014 is a whisky of the Fary Lochan brand bottled by the independent bottler Berry Bros. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Fary Lochan 2014 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Denmark it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Fary Lochan 2014 vegan?
