Flavour notes

The flavour profile of Brora Triptych is led by pronounced fruit and spice. Wood is clearly present, adding structure, while floral, salty and lightly peated notes sit more quietly in the background.

As no detailed tasting notes are provided for the individual vintages, the description remains focused on the overall profile of the set: fruit-driven, spice-led and shaped by a noticeable wood influence.

Product info about Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982)

Brora Triptych 3x50cl brings together three vintages from the same Highland name: 1972, 1977 and 1982. Rather than presenting a single snapshot, it offers a compact three-part view of Brora, bottled in 2021 at cask strength and 46.3% ABV.

With an outturn of 300 and a single cask character, this is a deliberately limited release. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see a bottling like this as something for drinkers who enjoy looking beyond the label into vintage, cask selection and scarcity, rather than as an everyday single malt.

Its flavour profile points toward a strong fruit-and-spice core, supported by a clear wood presence. Floral, salty and peated accents are lighter, adding detail without taking over. The appeal lies in the contrast between mature depth, spicy intensity and Highland structure.

About BRORA

Brora is a Scottish single malt whisky brand originating from the village of Brora in Sutherland, in the northern Highlands of Scotland. The original Brora distillery was founded in 1819 under the name Clynelish and later changed its name when a new Clynelish distillery was built next to it in 1968. From that moment on, the old distillery was referred to as Brora, mainly to avoid confusion with its modern neighbor. Brora was known for producing whisky with a distinctly smoky, peated style, which was exceptional for a Highland distillery, particularly during the periods of the 1960s and 1970s. The distillery closed its doors in 1983, making Brora whisky a highly sought-after and rare bottling among enthusiasts and collectors. In 2021, the distillery was reopened after an extensive restoration by Diageo, the current owner. Since the reopening, single malt whisky has once again been produced on a small scale, with respect for the character of the original Brora style. Thanks to this combination of tradition, unique flavor profile and fascinating history, Brora has built up a special reputation within the world of Scottish whisky.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982)?

Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) a single cask whisky?

Yes, Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) a whisky to invest in?

Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is a whisky of Brora that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) een goede keuze voor mij?

This Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) a spicy whisky?

Yes, Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is a whisky with an intensely spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) a fruity whisky?

Yes, Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is a whisky with an intensely fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruits and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) an independent bottling?

No, Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is an official bottling of Brora.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Brora Triptych 3x50cl (1972, 1977 & 1982) whisky from Brora is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
